An email from homerun.com saying a friend had sent me "a Chocolate Truffles (sic) from Schakolad Chocolate Factory," with a button to click to redeem the gift. Then it asked for my email address and password. I assumed it would lead to a redeemable coupon... instead it was a tricky window inviting me to send a similar offer to my own friends. Something like FaceBook's attempt to get all one's email contacts. When I tried to back off and NOT select any addresses, it captured them all anyway, and sent the same fake gift offer and spam message to everyone in my email address book. Needless to say, no free truffles -- but what is bad is the spam to all my innocent friends who may foolishly perpetuate the scam. Homerun.com changes products and merchants regularly, I understand; previously it was an obscure brand of coffee.

Thanks for posting this. I got an e-mail from them this morning for a free bottle of wine from a facebook friend. Typed homerun.com scam into google and got your post. Glad I did not click. WTF is wrong with these companies? They can all rot as far as I am concerned.

I went on a trip to Costa Rica that was advertised by homerun.com and serviced by Elegant Adventures and it was the best trip I have ever been on. It was better than advertised by homerun.com and that was due to the wonderful service from Elegant Adventures and the hotels they represent. Apparently Elegant Adventures has rated most of the hotels in the country and they offer their ratings to everyone so you can pick at which level you would like to travel and stay. I will definitely go back to homerun.com for more travel specials with Elegant Adventures that is for sure.

Wait, an email from a stranger asked you for your email password and you provided it to them? Because they promised you truffles?

I hope you've since changed your password (not just for that email account, but also everywhere else you use the same password).

I received this same scam email addressed to me from my son's work address. To be on the safe side, since I did try to click on the response, I changed my password to any accounts involving money and any of the passwords I used. Sneaky devils! I usually am so careful but this one caught me! It was for chocolate, which, of course, my son knows I like. I will NEVER click on anything, even purportedly from a family member, that asks for private info without checking with them first! Lesson learned!

I can't believe I fell for this. I never do, but it was a gift from an not-unexpected person with web savvy, and the page looked legit. Ugh!

I received one from an indie bookstore I had just begun to do business with. It was for truffle fries at a restaurant in the neighborhood of the bookstore. I thought, that's odd, but I clicked to accept the "gift." Three weeks later, just days before Christmas, they sent - to everyone in my gmail contact list - an email, saying I was sending them truffle fries as a gift. I have filed a complaint with the FTC, the local police department, and am preparing a lawsuit against them, including for stealing my identity. Merchants should avoid using this site because they can too be sued.

I got one for free movie tickets. I went through the same process of signing up, but I don't think what they are doing is any different from what Facebook or a bunch of other sites do. In order for them to have access to my contacts, I had to log in and enter my account information. Then, after doing that, I had the option to deselect any or all of my contacts before clicking the button that claims the gift for me and shares it with my friends. Personally, I deselected most of my contacts, included just a couple of them, and then got my free movie tickets. It would be different if I never entered my info and it already had all my contacts, or if it automatically sent an email without my clicking any buttons. Though I would prefer it didn't auto-select my contacts (or have sharing the free gift as part of the claiming process) I don't think anything was "illegal" and I definitely wasn't "hacked."

wow, Alic23! how long have you been employed by homerun.com?

Exactly what I was thinking before I read your comment!

I did not select ANYONE for them to send emails to. AND my email contacts in my gmail accounts are not my "friends," they are my business colleagues and in some cases strangers. I did NOT authorize them to send ANYTHING to anyone. Their email is extremely deceptive. They need to have a disclaimer saying "If you put in your email password, you are giving us permission to send this solicitation to every person you have ever sent an email to or received an email from." WHO would agree to that? No one. That's why they don't have it.

There is the old shared-password trick. You've given them your email. And you gave a password for their site itself. They go try that password on your email account. Lots of boneheads use the same password on every site. It works a lot.

Yes, this is a scam. I received a free beer from a friend and all I had to do was click on a link.

Except I had to give them my webmail login and the offer was really for a $2 beer.

Clearly they are trying to get people to advertise homerun.com for free to everyone in their address book.

I got a free movie ticket offer and the first thing I did was type in Homerun and free tickets - thanks for the posting. I knew it was to good to be true! saved me the hassle... wish more people would think before they click!!!

I too fell for this. I did, however, use my "spam" e-mail account that I have set up to give to companies that want an e-mail from me. I didn't complete the offer though because it asked for my credit card information to get my "free" tickets. I was afraid they would steal that information too.

The first thing I do when I get one of these offers is email the person(s) who purportedly sent it so they can immediately alert all their email contacts about this latest scam. Too bad Norton doesn't invent something to screen this sort of thing.

I received the "free chocolate truffles" e-mail, also with the bad grammar. It was from a good friend who has sent me gifts like that. But when the homerun.com page asked for my e-mail address and password, that told me it was a scam. How would THEY know if I'm logging in with the correct credentials?? Thank you, scamchecker.com for confirming it.

Thanks! I just got an e-mail from @homerunmail.com offering a free movie ticket. Glad I checked here first. Darn, I was all excited to go see a free movie, too.

caught me too; the $10 free movie ticket offer from a friend. How much trouble do I have? I clicked on the link but did not add any info. Now I see I have an "account" at www.homerun.com and they have my email address and a credit balance of $.05 and a "friend" which is my original friend who sent the email. I have so far not been able to reach her. What is my best course of action w/r to the site? Leave it alone or try to get my email & account off the site? Am I in any danger of email harvesting right now?

I got this, too, from a friend, and didn't click because it was clearly not really from him. But what I want to know is whether clicking where it says "if you prefer not to get promotional announcements from homerun.com, click here" would be a good thing to do. With regular spam I would never click on anything and let them know they reached a real email address. With real but annoying businesses that somehow get my address, I do unsubscribe. Any comments?

If you get an email from these people, the very best thing you can do is click "Report Spam" or "Flag as spam" in your email system. DO NOT click any links in the email. If you do, to be on the safe side, erase your cookies and change your password.
